The former chief executive officer of Ipswich City Council and his wife have been charged with one more count each of official corruption after allegedly receiving corrupt payments totalling more than $100,000.

There is growing pressure on Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe to dissolve Ipswich City Council after Mayor Andrew Antoniolli was charged with seven counts of fraud by the state's corruption watchdog.

Cr Antoniolli is the second Ipswich mayor to be charged by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC), with Paul Pisasale still to face court on charges of corruption, extortion, fraud, perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The alleged offences are not believed to be related.

After Mr Pisasale resigned as mayor last year, Cr Antoniolli took over the job in August, declaring he had a 19-point plan to ensure transparency and good governance.

But since then the CCC has charged a list of other Ipswich council officials.

The entire Ipswich City Council, west of Brisbane, will be sacked and administrators appointed, the Local Government Minister has announced.

The announcement came less than an hour after Mayor Andrew Antoniolli said he was standing down, and a day after being charged with fraud by Queensland's Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

He is facing seven counts of fraud for allegedly using council money to purchase auction items from charitable organisations over the past six years.

Minister Stirling Hinchliffe told State Parliament he would try to change the laws next week so administrators could be appointed.

"Today, I will ask Ipswich City Council to show cause why they should not be dismissed," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"Next week I will be asking Cabinet to consider strengthening the legislative powers of the Local Government Minister to dismiss councils, when they have lost the trust of their community.

If the council is dissolved I;m thinking of running on one of three planks:

  • Change my name. John Beattie or Bob Howard. Lots of old ducks will vote for someone they recognise.
  • Run on nothing. I promise to do nothing. I will take all the perks.
  • I'm working on the third.

Four mayors and one councillor have been immediately suspended, as new local government laws come into effect.

Last week, the Queensland government passed sweeping reforms, which included enhanced powers for Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and the automatic suspension of councillorscharged with serious integrity offences, such as bribery, corruption and fraud, with pay.

Is there a councillor that does not include fringe benefits as part of their salary package?

Years ago I considered putting myself up as a candidate for council election. The council was based on different areas, so you had to live in one of them. One guy was elected uncontested. It staggered me that only one person actually nominated for election. So he went straight in. I didn't bother because the stipend was pretty low (hence so much corruption) and I hate politics.

Brisbane city councillors get around $150k!

Holy sh*t! IIRC the base rate for a councillor in my area was getting $10k a year. The City of Melbourne may pay a lot more than that.

Ipswich city councillors will not receive payouts when they are sacked, the Queensland government says.

There are no provisions within the law that would allow sacked councillors to get payouts despite protests those not facing corruption charges should be compensated, Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has confirmed.

Former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale looked tired at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday morning as he faced fresh charges laid against him by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Charged with an additional eight charges of fraud and one of corruption, the charges allege Mr Pisasale used his position as mayor for personal financial gain including three interstate trips.

The charges allege that Mr Pisasale "dishonestly gained benefit for himself" on three occasions in December 2016, February 2017 and May 2017 with interstate travel.

A further charge of corruption while in his role as mayor was that Mr Pisasale allegedly  "corruptly agreed to champion the Yamanto project for himself on account of influencing Ipswich City Council employees and private contractors".

Mr Pisasale was also charged with using several sums of money, two sums "in his possession subject to a directive" and two other amounts that belonged to Ipswich City Council.

The Crime and Corruption Commission is investigating Moreton Bay Regional Council and its handling of a multi-million-dollar contract it has with a major political donor to and friend of mayor Allan Sutherland and other councillors.

In late May, the council went into closed session to debate renewing and extending a three-year, $7 million contract to promote the region with private company Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism Ltd. The contract, first awarded in July 2016, was not due to expire until June 2019.

Just Brisbane left now.
